CORRELATION OF MICROCYSTINS AND WATER ENVIRONMENT FACTORS IN MIYUN RESERVOIR OF BEIJING, CHINA
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 10 › Nr. 6
Our investigation in 2007 revealed that the concentration of microcystin (MC-LR) in Miyun reservoir was 0.224 μg L-1, below the safety limit of surface drinking water in China (1.0 μg L-1). The phytoplankton community in Miyun reservoir was composed of 8 divisions and 84 species (including genera and varieties). The density of phytoplangkton was 393.71?—104 cells L-1 including 24.6% of Chlorophyta, 32.5% of Cyanophyta and 15.3% of Bacillariophyta. The toxin-producing cyanobacteria incl...

Spirulina platensis AS BIOSORBENT OF ZINC IN WATER
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 12 › Nr. 5
AbstractZinc is an important metal for humans and the environment. Its intensive application in industry has led to water and soilcontamination. A lot of microorganisms both unicellular and multicellular can be applied for removal of metals from theenvironment. The process of zinc adsorption by cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis biomass was investigated. The concentrationsof 0.34 mM and 3.4 mM of ZnSO4·7H2O were used. The process of biosorption of zinc was studied during 1-hour experiment. To dete...

MICROCYSTINS REMOVAL BY COAGULATION AND CHLORINATION UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 13 › Nr. 4
AbstractToxic cyanobacteria are an emerging and increasing threat to public water supplies across the world. As a result,it is essential tominimize the risk from toxic cyanobacteria and their metabolites, and the key is to be vigilant and monitor for cyanobacteria andcyanotoxins throughout the source water and the treatment plant. The present study aims to verify the validity of the traditionalprocess of coagulation and chlorination to remove microcystins (MCs) in the Xinxiang water plant in Chi...

THE PHYTOPLANKTON COMPOSITION FEATURES OF FIVE ROMANIAN PELOGENOUS ECOSYSTEMS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 14 › Nr. 5
Abstract Planktonic algal samples were collected from lakes with different salinity (Salt Lake Brăila, Amara Lake, Fundata Lake, Techirghiol Lake and Black Lake-Sovata), in which mud used in balneary therapy is formed. A total of 189 species were recorded: 35 Cyanobacteria, 10 Euglenophyceae, 96 Bacillariophyceae, 33 Chlorophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae, 2 Cryptophyceae, 1 Xantophyceae and 9 Dinophyceae. The highest number of phytoplankton species was recorded in Techirghiol lake (127 species...

BIODEGRADATION OF BASIC FUCHSIN AND METHYL RED BY THE BLUE GREEN ALGAE Hydrocoleum oligotrichum AND Oscillatoria limnetica
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 15 › Nr. 2
In this work biodegradation of basic fuchsin and methyl red by the blue green algae Hydrocoleum oligotrichum and Oscillatoria limnetica was investigated. The degradation of basic fuschin after 7 days by H. oligotrichum and O. limnetica was 92.44% and 90.23%, respectively. On the other hand, the degradation of methyl red by H. oligotrichum and O. limnetica after 7 days was 53.23% and 50.18%, respectively. The degradation of these dyes by algae seems to be related to the molecular structures of...

DEVELOPMENT OF A BIOLUMINESCENT CYANOBACTERIAL REPORTER STRAIN FOR DETECTION OF ARSENITE, ARSENATE AND ANTIMONITE
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 16 › Nr. 11
In the present study the potential of a gene fusion between the arsB promoter from Synechocystis 6803 and the bacterial luxAB genes was evaluated to be used as a cyanobacterial bioreporter for monitoring the bioavailability of inorganic arsenic species. A whole-cell bioreporter strain, designated arsLux, was constructed based on this fusion. In concert with the specificity of the promoter presented earlier, luminescent signal could be detected upon exposure to arsenite, arsenate and antimonite, ...

GROWTH OF Phormidium bigranulatum-DOMINATED MAT IN RELATION TO NATURE OF THE SUBSTRATUM, TIME, pH AND NUTRIENT AVAILABILITY
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 17 › Nr. 2
The growth of a non-axenic Phormidium bigranulatum-dominated mat was tested under a range of chemical parameters and types of substrate. Total biomass yield (in term of mg chlorophyll a) of mats grown on muslin cloth (0.64 mg) and cotton mesh (0.62 mg) were significantly higher than those on other substrates, such as, nylon net (0.50 mg), sands of river Sone (0.43 mg) and river Ganga (0.30 mg), rice husk (0.38 mg) and saw dust (0.21 mg). The Phormidium mat would be easy to handle in bioremdation...

CONTROL MEASURES FOR Cyanobacteria AND Cyanotoxins IN DRINKING WATER
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 17 › Nr. 10
Algal bloom can represent a serious consequence of the eutrophication of surface water. Some of these algae, called cyanobacteria, are of particular interest for their effect on human health due to their capacity to produce cyanotoxins. In many countries, in fact, there are important problems of poisoning attributed to toxic cyanobacteria and contamination of water sources (specially lakes) resulting in increased cyanobacterial growth. Cyanobacteria can become particularly harmful for humans whe...

PHOTOAUTOTROPHIC PRODUCTION OF POLY-Β-HYDROXYBUTYRATE (PHB) FROM CYANOBACTERIA: NITRATE EFFECTS AND SCREENING OF STRAINS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 6
The polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production by photoautotrophic cultures is a potential eco-sustainable process to produce bioplastics. The biosynthesis of PHB by cyanobacteria meets a twofold target: the use of CO2 as feedstock alternative to the fossil resource used in the conventional processes; the contribution to the reduction of the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. This contribution reports results of a study regarding the optimal growth conditions for cyanobacteria to produce PHB unde...
