Quality analysis of the soils in the Cordun metallurgical platform area
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 7Nr. 6
AbstractThe present article deals with the study of the quality of the soils in the Cordun area – the waste dump. This refers to the characteristics of the analyzed location site (geomorphological, geological considerations, the pedological and agrochemical characterization of the soils in the area outside the plant), but also to the establishment of the pollution rate in the location site (experimenata data, results and debates). The conclusion of the present article is that the analyzed area...

Survey of electromagnetic environment due to mobile communications
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 2
AbstractThis paper presents an analysis of the levels of electromagnetic fields caused by cellular base stations or mobile phones, measured in some residential areas. A statistical processing of the data has also been done in order to estimate both the short-term and the long-term variability of the fields caused by cellular base stations in some apartments and on the terraces of the apartment buildings at tens or hundreds of meters distance from the antenna systems. In some places, comparative ...

Study on the multi-annnual variability of particulate matter PM10 in Suceava City
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 3
Abstract Fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone are now generally recognized as the most significant in terms of health impacts. This study shows that concentrations of particulate matter up to 10 microns in diameter (PM10) in Suceava city exceeded EU limits set to protect human health during 2004-2007. In order to design effective PM10 air quality management programmes, it is essential to identify the sources affecting PM10 background levels. For this, PM10 data series were analyzed ...

Assessment of some heavy metals in soils, drinking water, medicinal plants and their liquid extracts
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 3
Abstract Pollution with toxic metals is a serious concern, because once these elements enter in the soil they can be present for a long time, with the potential contamination of drinking water sources. Certain metals in soil may be taken up by plants which are subsequently harvest for human consumption. Our objective was to study the presence of heavy metals in soils, groundwater sources, some medicinal plants from areas of the water sources and in its watery extracts. All of the samples, af...

Assessment of human and natural impacts over water quality in the prut river basin, Romania
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 6
Abstract The Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) concept evolved over time, the focus on river basin management, consultation and coordination with all water users, and the use of the â€?polluter pays?? principle being all included in the EU Water Framework Directive (EC Directive, 2000), which forms the basis of water management undertaken in Europe. The role and significance of water resources for sustainable development, as well as the water crisis experienced nowadays are ...

MICROWAVE-ASSISTED HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS BASED ON ZEOLITE-TiO2 NANOCRYSTALS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 11Nr. 3
The composite materials based on natural zeolite and undoped and N-doped TiO2, i.e., Z-Na-TiO2 and Z-Na-TiO2-N, were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction in microwave-assisted hydrothermal conditions. Undoped TiO2 and N-doped TiO2 nanocrystals were previously synthesized by sol-gel method. The X-rays diffraction results of TiO2 nanocrystals indicated that anatase TiO2 is the dominant crystalline type. The composite materials were structural and morphological characterized by X-ray di...

Abstract An original Discrete Perfect Sets (DPS) algorithm was developed and applied to clustering of earthquake epicenters with M≥3.0 in California. The obtained clusters correspond well with the locations of the epicenters of strong earthquakes with M≥6.5. This fact allows considering them as earthquake-prone areas for the magnitude M≥6.5. We compared the obtained clusters with the areas recognized in 1976 using Earthquake-Prone Areas (EPA) method. The compariso...

Dobrudja is a region situated in the South – East of Romania, where the drought period is about 6 monthper year. Therefore, finding a model for the precipitation trend is the first step on understanding the weather evolution and itsprediction. In order to evaluate the precipitation variability in Dobrudja the annual and monthly precipitat...

Despite the industrial decline, air pollution continues to be a major issue in Romanian cities. As in many other urban areas, in Iasi city the traffic is one of the main sources of air pollution which has a high environmental impact, also exposing population’s health to a high risk. The study focuses on the small scale examining the spatial and temporal variability of air pollution in a very important and frequently circulated crossroad, Podu de Piatra. Using various data from air pollu...

PROMOTING EFFECT OF CERIA ON THE CATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF CeO2-ZnO POLYCRYSTALLINE MATERIALS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 4
A polycrystalline CeO2-ZnO catalyst was prepared by using a hydrothermal procedure in order to improve the structural properties. This polycrystalline material was then used to remove organic pollutants from aqueous solutions by the means of photocatalysis. The structural, morphological and optical properties of as-prepared materials were characterized by several techniques, such as UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, FTIR, XRD. The SEM analysis shows that the crystallite size sample varies in the ran...

PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NANOCOMPOSITE MATERIAL BASED ON TiO2-Ag FOR ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 4
A simple and efficient method for preparing Ag-doped TiO2 nanoparticles was successfully developed, by associating the sol-gel method and the impregnation-reduction. While titanium dioxide is one of the most used solids as photocatalyst, silver is particularly interesting for applications in biological and chemical detection and for its antibacterial properties. Moreover, in photocatalysis silver acts as an electron sink and donor in capturing the photogenerated electrons. The structural and mor...

CLOSING THE MATERIALS CYCLE IN PYROMETALLURGICAL PRODUCTION OF LEAD FROM WASTE FRACTIONS: HYDROMETALLURGICAL PURIFICATION OF IRON CONTAINING WASTE IN VIEW OF RECYCLING
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 2
Pyrometallurgical recycling of lead from spent batteries entails secondary waste fractions generated in the blast furnace as iron stone and lead slags. For further purification of both fractions, hydrometallurgic processing is proposed. This paper focuses on purification of iron stone, in view of recovering metals (mainly lead) and of producing decontaminated iron stone fit for further recycling. The results demonstrate that iron stone is mainly composed of iron and lead; copper, zinc and antimo...

SPATIAL ASSESSMENT OF SOIL SALINITY BY ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION SURVEY
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 18Nr. 9
Salinization occurs in natural conditions as a result of a complex of factors such as climate, topography, and hydrogeology. Salinity principally occurs in sub-humid to arid regions but secondary salinization is a consequence of direct human activities it extends by the day. In the field, soil salinity is deduced from apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) by using a range of devices. Although a number of proximal sensors have recently been used worldwide to simplify fieldwork, few studies using...

The solar energy received by the atmosphere of the Earth is universally distributed, which constitutes the atmospheric dynamics. The changes observed in the climate of the Earth are due to solar output variations. Some detailed reviews have accounted for the influence of solar activities on the climate using sunspot number derived from peak Sun hours, but has gaps in analyzing critical statistical background information, seasonal, latitudinal and solar activity year validation.
