Removal of zinc (II) from aqueous solutions by romanian sphagnum peat moss
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 6Nr. 3
In recent years the removal of toxic substances especially heavy metals from water and wastewater by using of non-conventional low-cost sorbent (industrial wastes and some natural material including microorganisms, plant-derived materials, agricultural products and by-products, mineral oxides, clays) has received much attention. In this paper efficiency of Zn (II) removal from aqueous solutions by sorption onto Romanian sphagnum peat moss was studied in batch experiments involving process parame...

Relationships between metals extent and cytological characteristics at Prunus persica L. pollen
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 7Nr. 2
The heavy metal concentrations exceeding the standard admissibility, determine modifications of some cytological parameters. Therefore, by this paper, there were determined the concentrations of copper, iron, manganese and zinc from Prunus persica L. pollen grains (Research-Development Fruitgrowing Station, Constantza, Romania) using wet digestion followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Then, the main cytological parameters (such as citological viability and germination capacity...

Studies on transfer and bioaccumulation of heavy metals from soil into lettuce
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 7Nr. 5
AbstractThis paper presents the connection between the heavy metals concentration in soil and their bioaccumulation in lettuce. Lettuce is a very good bioaccumulator of heavy metals and nutrients. In general, plants manifest a certain reaction to increasing the toxic metal concentrations in soil which they are cultivated on. The differences depend on plants sensitivity, and time exposure intensity (concentration of heavy metals, cultivation length, etc.), presence or absence of nutrients and oth...

STUDY OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION AND BIOACCUMULATION IN THE BLACK SEA LIVING ENVIRONMENT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 12Nr. 2
Abstract The Black Sea is seriously affected by a large range of pollutants, despite severe laws regarding the protection of sea ecosystems. Heavy metals are among the most important xenobiotics from the environment, presenting also toxicity for humans. The studies upon heavy metals have proven that the sediments have the highest concentrations and they can release metals back to water and this fact represents a risk for the humans and aquatic ecosystem life. The use of aquatic ...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 12Nr. 2
Abstract Heavy metals are common contaminants of freshwaters and they can produce toxic effects on aquatic fauna and flora. The ions of heavy metals existing in freshwaters are well known as toxicants for the aquatic organisms. Duckweed is an aquatic plant of small size that floats on fresh water surface of lakes and marshes. The small plants are highly exposed to aquatic pollutants and as a result they are very sensitive to the toxic effects. As consequence the duckweed plants are...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 11
This paper reports the possibility of using zinc ash as a secondary source for zinc oxide, which can be further used as white pigment. For the extraction of zinc from zinc ash, sulphuric acid was used. The impact of different parameters (ash fraction, contact time, sulphuric acid concentration and liquid:solid (L:S) ratio) upon the extraction degree of metallic ions from zinc ash was studied. The optimum conditions for the metallic ions extraction are: 20 % H2SO4, 30 minutes contact time, 1:1 L:...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 2
Pyrometallurgical recycling of lead from spent batteries entails secondary waste fractions generated in the blast furnace as iron stone and lead slags. For further purification of both fractions, hydrometallurgic processing is proposed. This paper focuses on purification of iron stone, in view of recovering metals (mainly lead) and of producing decontaminated iron stone fit for further recycling. The results demonstrate that iron stone is mainly composed of iron and lead; copper, zinc and antimo...
