Nanocomposite materials based on polymers and alumina nanoparticles
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 4
Abstract The synergistic combination of polymers and inorganic compounds via sol-gel process has attracted great attention, by manipulating structure at molecular level, for developing new materials with desired properties. These new hybrid materials could have a controllable combination of the benefits of polymers (flexibility, toughness, ease of processing) and those of ceramics or glasses (hardness, durability, thermal stability). The microstructures and the properties of hybrid materials...

New ecomaterials for wood preservation
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 4
Abstract Wood has been used as an engineering material because it is low in cost, renewable and strong and it requires low processing energy. Wood has many excellent properties that result from its exceptional combination of microstructural, ultrastructural and molecular features. The main drawback is its dimensional instability in the presence of moisture, which can affects also the biological stability. Wood is susceptible to degradation in a number of ways, including rot or decay, insect a...

Chelating sorbent containing two types of functional groups hydroxamic acid and amidoxime for lead (II) ions effluent management
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 9Nr. 1
Abstract The removal efficiency of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions by sorption on a bifunctional acrylic ion exchange resin with groups of hydroxamic acid and amidoxime is presented. It was found that Pb(II) sorption potential varies as function of solution pH, initial metal concentration, contact time and temperature. From aqueous solutions with Pb(II) initial concentration of 82.96 ?ŽÂ?g/mL the sorption percentage is 98.64%. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to model the Pb(II) ...

PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HYBRID NANOCOMPOSITES FILMS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 10Nr. 9
Abstract:Hybrid nanocomposites may synergistically combine and enhance the properties of inorganic nanoparticles and organicmolecules. The objective of this paper is to examine particular nanocomposites films based on binary copolymers and inorganic TiO2nanoparticles from the structure and properties point of view. These nanoparticles were dispersed in maleic anhydride-styrene(MAS) copolymer by using elaidic acid, trans isomer of the oleic acid, as coupling agent in order to increase the compatib...

PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPLEX COAGULANTS DERIVED FROM WEAK AND MEDIUM ANIONIC POLYMERS AND MEDIUM CATIONIC SURFACTANT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 11Nr. 1
This paper presents the physicochemical and rheological properties of some complex coagulants derived from the weak and medium anionic polymers and medium cationic surfactant in order to evaluate the opportunity to use them in destabilizing and removing the colloidal systems from water and wastewater. In this respect, weak anionic and medium anionic copolymers of acrylamide and sodium acrylate with commercial names of Preastol 2515 and Preastol 2540, and a medium cationic surfactant derived from...

THE ROLE OF GREEN CHEMISTRY IN BIOMASS PROCESSING
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 12Nr. 3
The book edited by Haibo Xie and NicholasGathergood focuses on one of the most importantscientific issues of the 21 century which is thereplacing fossil fuel with sustainable alternatives suchas biomass. Fossil fuels are conventional rawmaterials for many industrial sectors includingchemical and energy production. Usage of fossil fuelis limited by their availability, price and carbonfootprint. Biomass is a renewable resource globallyavailable, cheaper and carbon sequestering. Step bystep shiftin...

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF ANIONIC POLYMER-CATIONIC SURFACTANT COMPLEX COAGULANTS IN WATER TREATMENT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 13Nr. 8
AbstractThe performance of some complex coagulants derived from weak and medium anionic polymers and medium cationic surfactantin coagulation-flocculation process for water treatment was experimentally investigated by carrying out kinetic studies and bydetermining the optimum coagulant dose. The complex coagulants were prepared from weak anionic and medium anioniccopolymers of acrylamide and sodium acrylate with the commercial names Praestol 2515 and Praestol 2540, and mediumcationic surfactant ...

DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A PLANT FOR GLYCEROL CONVERSION TO ACROLEIN
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 14Nr. 3
Abstract The development of biodiesel industry in the recent past brought into discussion the valorization of glycerol as the byproduct of this technology. Dehydration of glycerol leads to acrolein, mainly used as a raw material in the production of acrylic acid and its esters. Several research efforts dealing with the synthesis of acrolein from glycerol are reported in the literature. However, they are limited to catalyst testing on laboratory scale, no attention being paid to the process f...

ALUMINA MATRIX WITH CONTROLLED MORPHOLOGY FOR COLORED SPECTRALLY SELECTIVE COATINGS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 3
This study presents the results obtained in tailoring thin films of alumina, deposited onto aluminium substrates by spray pyrolysis, at 250°C, using AlCl3 solutions (0.15M) in a water:ethanol (1:1) solvent mixture. As morphology controlling agents, acetylacetone and maleic acid based copolymers are added in the precursors’ solutions. The precursors’ systems are analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy and the surface morphology of alumina thin films is investigated by atomic force microscop...

SYNTHETIC TEXTILE WASTEWATERS TREATMENT BY COAGULATION/FLOCCULATION USING FERRIC SALT AS COAGULANT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 9
Three different synthetic textile dyeing wastewaters were treated by a chemical coagulation/flocculation process, using ferric sulphate as coagulant. Polyacrylamide (Magnafloc 155) and polyamine (Superfloc C-573) based flocculants were applied. The influence of pH (between 3.5 and 10.4) and Fe3+ concentration (from 15 to 4000 mg/L) in both color and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal of polyester, cotton and acrylic dyeing wastewaters was assessed in the coagulation stage. As far as floc...

IMPROVEMENT OF SOME POST-CONSUMER POLYPROPYLENE (rPP) BY MELT MODIFICATION WITH STYRENE-DIENE BLOCK COPOLYMERS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 11
Nowadays, the polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene) are increasingly consumed in large amounts for many applications. This issue causes a concern regarding the environmental impact of the waste materials generated after the first use. Mechanical recycling of polyolefin wastes helps to conserve oil and gas resources and reduce the polymeric waste accumulation in environment. In this paper, the modification of some post-consumer polypropylene (rPP) properties coming from packaging processi...
