Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 5
In this research, the capability of uranium biosorption by dried biomass of the red algae was investigated in a batch system. For the screening of the most appropriate biosorbent, they were placed in 0.5 mmol/L uranium solution with different pH for 3hrs of contact times. The obtained results showed that the species of the Gracilaria corticata (J. Agardh) are having the maximum rate of the biosorption. Sorption equilibrium was reached within 3hrs of contact time (at pH 4.5), and the results of t...

GAS HOLD UP IN THE CULTIVATION OF A PETROLEUM-DEGRADING BACTERIAL CONSORTIUM
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 5
The hydrodynamic behavior of bubble column bioreactors (BCB) is strongly dependent on the bubbly flow regime. Therefore, the influence of superficial gas velocity (Ug) and Sauter mean diameter (d32) on gas hold up (εg) was evaluated for the cultivation of a petroleum-degrading consortium. Hydrodynamic parameters were determined by photographic techniques. Also, the biomass cultivation was quantified by suspended solids formation (SS). Our findings indicated that the d32 increased at high...

KINETIC AND ENZYME RECYCLING STUDIES OF IMMOBILIZED β-GLUCOSIDASE FOR LIGNOCELLULOSIC BIOMASS HYDROLYSIS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 6
β-glucosidases are very important in the improvement of cellulose degradation rates by diminishing the inhibition of end products. Although, cellulase cost has reduced significantly in last decade but still the high costs of biomass saccharification is one of the main challenges for the commercialization of ethanol from LC biomass. In this work, β-glucosidase immobilization in calcium alginate was optimized using response surface methodology. 89% immobilization efficiency was achieved ...

MANAGEMENT PLANNING METHOD FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM FOREST BIOMASS: DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPTIMIZATION SYSTEM AND CASE STUDY FOR A FINNISH ENERGY PLANT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 3
In this study, we consider a potential Finnish solution to sustainable energy production to satisfy the European Union's forestrelated energy policies related to climate change. Conventional energy production includes a number of fossil fuel, peat, and renewable fuel procurement chains that supply a combined heat and power (CHP) plant during different periods of the year. In Finland, peat is commonly used as fuel by energy plants. However, it is not environmentally friendly because it is ...

DIMENSION AND STRUCTURAL TRAITS OF SOIL MICROPORES IN CULTIVATIONS DIFFERING IN THE DURATION OF ORGANIC MANAGEMENT
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 17Nr. 7
The objectives of this study were to investigate: a) whether the duration of organic farming influences the dimension, shape and geometry (fractal dimension) of soil micropores (<50μm) and b) for relationships of morphometric traits with certain chemical and biochemical soil variables (microbial biomass, N- and C-mineralization rates, NH4+, NO3-, organic C and N, extractable P, Mg+2, K+, Ca+2). We compared soil micromorphometric traits (area, perimeter, compactness, solidity, eccentricity)...
