Abstract:

This paper assesses flood losses in Romania for the period 2000-2009 normalised at the level of 2005 prices. For this porpose available information on annual flood losses for 2000-2009 period from the General Inspectorate for Emergencies Situations (GIES) were used. Unfortunately, the available records of flood damage do not provide correct information needed for governmental or private efficient decision-making. To address this problem, accurate adjustment data on costs and vulnerability associated with flooding were obtained. Final results show no clear evidence of the flood damages trend related to normalised flood losses. However, it can be emphasized the high level of the the averge annual flood damages (422 millions 2005 US $), despite very large hard and soft measured adopted in the last years.
