Floodplain revegetation and river basin restoration
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 6 › Nr. 4
AbstractDuring the modern history the ability of plant roots to consolidate and strengthen the soil was exploited twice in France: once in1867 by Joseph Monier who created the reinforced concrete, and then in 1962 by Henry Vidal who created structured soils. The paper presents the some results obtained on the ecological protection of floodplain in major riverbeds. The aerodynamic modeling represents an efficient, economic and easy way to work with. The main condition of successful experiments is ...

Current practice of solid waste management in Malaysia and its disposal
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 6 › Nr. 4
AbstractMalaysia is a country that has recorded a phenomenal economic development success story. One of the most important problems is solid waste due to inadequate management practices. This resulted in an increase in the amount of waste generated. The national average in at 0.5-0.8 kg/person/day, but in the cities the figures have escalated to 1.7 kg/person/day. This paper addresses the current practice of solid waste management and its disposal in Malaysia. Currently, the waste management app...

AbstractThe mechanisms in the shaping of organic food in Denmark since the 1970'ies are analysed as a contribution to the discussion of strategies for a more sustainable production and consumption of food. The background is the major  achievements in Denmark within organic food since the 1970'ies, but also the recent years' reduction in the land converted to organic farming. The analyses are based on experiences from projects, analyses and literature and draw on innovation theory and theory...

Monitoring of environmental low frequency magnetic fields
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 8 › Nr. 5
AbstractWith a view to make a long term survey of the magnetic fields generated by the power line sources, appliances or, generally, by the low frequency magnetic field sources, a tri-axis magnetic field meter was proposed. Referring to the magnetic field sensor, both the characteristic proportional of the field strength and proportional to the time derivate of the field strength were considered. Thus, two active magnetic field meters working in 40 Hz ? 200 kHz frequency range were designed. In ...

Study of copper and cadmium accumulation by bean
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 8 › Nr. 5
Abstract Bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated soil is one of the major concerns of our days. Phytoextraction has been lately utilized as an alternative of in situ remediation technology for polluted soils but is generally perceived to be too slow. Even so, phytoextraction is an efficient long lasting, accessible and environmentally friendly technique. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the phytoextraction potential of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in stress conditions induced by heavy me...

Abstract When plants are exposed to heavy metals influence, the processes of growth inhibition, ion leakage of all membrane, distribution of pigment and even more death of plants are produced. The physiological and biochemical changes in germinating seedling and cultivation in plastic pots experiments of different plant species (maize, bean, oat, and spinach) were investigated under the influence of copper ions as stress agent. AbstractOn a daily basis one is confronted with litter. Most forms of litter are, however, of no concern to people. Nonetheless, litteraccounts for serious economic costs, and causes negative effects to health, safety and biodiversity. Most countries implementlitter reduction policy programs, often in the form of litter collection and penalties for littering. Litter reduction does notnecessarily have to be a government initiative as grassroots and business initiatives have shown; for instance, c...

Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 15 › Nr. 11
Safe utilization of fly ash (FA) and reclamation of sodic soils are important environmental problems. In this study a field experiment was carried out with Vigna radiata L. crop using fly ash (FA) and phosphogypsum (PGY) as amendments in sodic soil during 2011 at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. V. radiata L. was sown in sodic soil amended with press mud (10 t ha-1) considered as control. Besides, 10 and 20 t ha-1 doses of FA and PGY were considered as other four treatments, respectively. The grow...

ATHERMAL MICROWAVE RADIATION AFFECTS THE GENETIC OF VEGETAL EMBRYOS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 15 › Nr. 12
In this paper low power microwave radiation impact on Zea mays root meristeme tissues was investigated. Seeds with uniform genophond were exposed for 3 hours at 10 W incident power level in controlled condition to continuous wave at three different frequencies (0.6 GHz, 1 GHz and 2.5 GHz) and let to germinate after electromagnetic exposure. Dosimetric assessment made experimentally and computationally allowed the proper energetic characterization of the interaction between vegetal tissue and rad...

BIODEGRADATION KINETICS OF MIXED MICROBIAL CULTURE UTILIZING 1,1-DCE AS THE SOLE CARBON SOURCE
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 15 › Nr. 12
The mixed microbial culture, isolated from the aerobic sludge was used to study biodegradation of 1,1-DCE as the sole carbon source in batch flasks. 1,1-DCE initial concentration in the medium was varied from 100μg/L to 1000μg/L. The maximum removal rate of 1,1-DCE was 89.2% obtained at 400μg/L 1,1-DCE concentration in the medium. The biodegradation kinetics of 1,1-DCE was found to follow three-half-order model at all initial 1,1-DCE concentrations with regression values greater than 0....

Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 17 › Nr. 6
With anticipation of global warming and climate change, quantitative prediction of future precipitation trend is more important than ever. Global circulation models (GCMs) are widely used as the base for simulating climate change. However, due to their coarse resolution, researchers have been using various downscaling techniques to produce finer model for regional use. Recent advancements in metaheuristic algorithms have provided an alternative approach in downscaling. This paper introduces the ...

TOLUENE BIOFILTRATION AS AFFECTED BY RYEGRASS ROOTS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 17 › Nr. 8
Gaseous toluene biofiltration as affected by ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) roots was investigated in this study. The results revealed that the populations of bacteria, actinomycetes were larger in the ryegrass rhizosphere than in the bulk soil since ryegrass provided root exudates as major nutrients available for the microorganisms. An increase in the microbial populations in a ryegrass-growing biofilter would significantly stimulate toluene biodegradation in comparison with a vegetation-free bio...

CONCENTRATIONS OF PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS OF SOIL FOLLOWING PHYTOREMEDIATION
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 17 › Nr. 9
Petroleum hydrocarbons not only are toxic to humans and other living organisms, but will also pollute groundwater. It is thus critical to decrease the concentration of these pollutants in soil. Phytoremediation is an effective way to remove toxic compounds from soil. The current study used sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) to reduce petroleum hydrocarbon content of contaminated soil around Isfahan Oil Refinery (Isfahan, Iran) and assessed the concentrations of pe...

SWITCHGRASS BIOMASS AS A SUBSTRATE FOR Camellia AND Cuphea PRODUCTION IN CONTAINER
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 19 › Nr. 1
In Spain, most substrates used in the production of plants in containers, are composed of peat in combination with other components such as pine bark, perlite or vermiculite. In order to find alternatives to the use of peat, shredded switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass was evaluated as a component of the substrates. Five substrates were prepared with the following proportions, by volume, of commercial substrates:switchgrass: 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100. Pots were filled with the ...
